Structural Health Monitoring: SHM

David W. Allen

David W. Allen

David was in the first Los Alamos Dynamics Summer School Class (summer of 2000). He subsequently graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (ranked by U.S. New and World Report as the top engineering school in the country that does not offer a Ph. D. program) in the spring of 2001 with a dual major in mechanical engineering and physics. David then returned to LANL as a UGS from July 2001–August 2002. During this time he was instrumental in developing the DIAMOND II Software package. As a direct result of this software development, David was awarded LANL’s Outstanding UGS Performance award in August 2002. David started graduate school in the Mechanical Engineering  at VPI in August of 2002. He returned to LANL as a GRA during the summer of 2003 and again in January of 2004. David received his MS degree in Mechanical Engineering in August, 2004 from VPI. David is now a Technical Staff Member in ESA-WR on the Validation Methods team.

Technical Background: David brings a solid academic foundation in engineering mechanics with emphasis on software development, time-series analysis and statistical modeling. During his UGS and GRA appointments at Los Alamos, David has been the primary developer of the DIAMOND II software package. DIAMOND II was developed in JAVA, which is a front end for a suite of MATLAB routines that can be combined to develop a structural health monitoring process. This software is specifically designed to allow an engineer to develop a custom structural health monitoring package using a “drag and drop” procedure where data compatibility between routines is handled in a seamless manner for the user.
