The Windshield Tour (#16) and LAHS Tour (#17) are available to all guests attending the Los Alamos Employee Family Celebration with a Lab employee (current or former).

Sign up for these tours at the main flagpole in front of Duane Smith Auditorium when you arrive at LAHS on Saturday. Space is limited and all tours will be on a first-come, first-served basis. (Schedule of tours will posted when available.)

Windshield Tour (#16)

See the tour map (pdf)

The Windshield Tour will take participants by bus to some general points of interest at the Lab. Participants must stay on the bus during the entire tour. All tour participants must be registered and accompanied by an individual with a Z# (active or retired).

During World War II, the main technical area of the Lab was located in downtown Los lamos around Ashley Pond. In the early 1950s, the main technical area was moved across Los Alamos Canyon to Technical Area 3 (TA-3). This tour will introduce guests to TA-3's history and key facilities. The tour will also include a stop at the TA-60 Rack Assembly Facility, where underground nuclear testing will be discussed, as well as a drive to the S Site where the Lab's high explosives experiments are conducted.

Note: For guests with disabilities, buses for the windshield tours will be provided by All Aboard America, a private transportation company. The buses meet standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act, providing accessibility for wheelchairs and other physical needs through the use of lifts.

Windshield Tour Schedule

Tips for a comfortable tour:

  • Restroom facilities are supposed to be available on the windshield tour (#16) buses, as well as at the NSSB for tour #15, but with the crowds we cannot guarantee they will be in working order all day. There will be no restrooms available on tours #1-14, either on the bus or at the tour destination, so plan ahead—use the restroom before you take your tour.
  • Need water on the tour? Bring a water bottle with you. No water will be provided on the buses and temperatures are likely to be high.

Los Alamos High School Tour (#17)

Walking tours

LAHS will be conducting walking tours of its new three-story "A-Wing" building. The tour of that newly constructed facility will include classrooms, the new state-of-the-art cooking lab, the Topper Theater and the two-story student Commons area.
