Before applying

How to apply

  1. Complete the application form.
  2. Email application materials as a PDF attachment to swx-school@lanl.gov.
    • Combine all items into one PDF (nomination letter may be included in the one PDF or sent separately).
    • PDF size should be under ~5 MB, or it may be bounced by the email server.

Application materials

  1. Cover letter describing your research interests and career goals, and why it would benefit you to attend a summer school about space weather, potential project ideas and mentor requests. (no more than two pages).
  2. Current CV including full list of publications and presentations (no page limit). 
    • In the publications list, only include manuscripts which have been published, are in press, or are officially submitted to a journal. Do not list any manuscripts which are in preparation and not yet submitted. 
    • If there are any non-peer-reviewed publications, they may be included in the list, but must be indicated as non-peer-reviewed publications. 
    • In the presentation list, include both talks and posters.  If you were not first-author on a presentation, but you were the primary presenter, you may indicate this. 
    • Indicate any invited presentations.
  3. Undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
    • Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
    • If transcripts are not in English, provide a translation.
    • If grades are not in the U.S.-traditional lettered (A,B,C), or GPA (out of 4.0) formats, provide a conversion of your grades into the lettered format.
    • Transcripts will also be used to confirm that you are a currently enrolled graduate student. Therefore, it is recommended that graduate transcripts include classes in progress for the current term, or else be dated very recently and indicate, in some way, your status as a currently enrolled student.
  4. Brief description of your PhD program and how far along you are in that program. This description should include the name of your degree, typical number of years to completion, and the schedule of required degree qualification exams. You should indicate your current year in school and if you have already completed your core course requirements and any of the degree qualification exams. (No more than half a page)
  5. Nomination letter from your advisor.
  6. Two additional reference letters if you are NOT enrolled in a graduate program in the U.S..

It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all application materials are received on time.

If you do not receive an acknowledgement of receipt of your application materials from the summer school director within two days of submitting your application, please contact the director.
