Explosives Pulse Power Facility

Facility Description

Unique in the world, the Explosive Pulse Power Facility is ideally configured for research, development, and testing of full-scale, explosively powered, pulsed electrodynamic devices. The facility features four 20-kilovolt, 600-kilojoule capacitor bank modules. These modules can be adapted for parallel or series connection into a high-current, low-inductance, multiple-cable, transmission-line network that feeds closing switches and headers at the firing runway.

A variety of diagnostic instruments including ultrafast electro-optic sensors, interferometers, electromagnetometers, spectrometers, and photographic and radiographic cameras can be fielded to suit the most demanding of measurement needs. Data recording by fast analog and digital oscilloscopes is routine and can be supplemented by transient digitizers in an adjacent trailer bay.

The facility is particularly well suited for high-energy-density physics studies of pulsed high-magnetic fields, plasmas, high-performance switches, generators, and transient inductive or capacitive energy stores. The facility's expert staff is well acquainted with performing difficult experiments requiring high vacuum, cryogenics, specialty gases, and explosive charges exceeding 1,000 pounds.
