Detonation Science & Technology Facilities

Facility Description

The Detonation Science & Technology Facility is housed in three technical areas.

At TA-22 we research and develop high-energy detonators and related devices; fabricate detonators, cables and firing systems; qualify detonator performance; and perform other detonator testing.

At TA-39 we perform gas-gun-driven shockwave and isobaric expansion experiments to characterize the equation-of-state of energetic materials. We perform shockwave physics experiments on a two-stage light gas gun and a smaller single-stage gun. We use a high-pressure isobaric expansion setup to perform pulse-heated liquid metal experiments.

At TA-40 we study the equation-of-state characteristics and properties of high explosives and inert materials. Our capabilities also include experimental, theoretical, and computational studies of energetic material initiation and detonation physics and chemistry. We conduct experiments to test advanced hydrodynamic designs for systems such as explosive lenses and penetrators.
