ARPA-E Second Call for Energy R&D

The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) has released a second round of Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) for innovative energy research projects. The grants will draw upon $100 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds and are designed to accelerate innovation in green technology, increase U.S. competitiveness, and create jobs.

The three FOAs of this funding round are focused specifically on (i) new approaches for producing liquid transportation fuels from carbon dioxide, without using petroleum or biomass; (ii) low-cost, ultra-high-energy-density batteries for plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles; and (iii) innovative materials for carbon capture. Links to the FOAs are provided on the right. Potential applicants are encouraged to read the appropriate FOA carefully.

Applicants must submit a concept paper by 5:00 PM EST on Friday, January 15, 2010. Applicants can expect to receive an invitation to submit a full application in early February 2010.

Under this group of FOAs, as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) LANL can participate in one of two ways: LANL may be the project lead when the project involves a consortium, collaboration, or other teaming arrangement; or LANL can be a member of a team in a proposal led by another institution.

The Technology Transfer Division (TT) has reviewed the FOAs and has prepared a document that summarizes eligibility and submission requirements (see link to the right). TT, in accord with the Stimulus Project Office, is leading LANL’s response. TT has completed all registration requirements and will be responsible for submitting LANL-led proposals.

LANL PIs that wish to participate in preparing a concept paper, with either LANL as lead or as a team member, should contact John Mott (jmott@lanl.gov; 665-0883) or Steve Girrens (sgirrens@lanl.gov; 665-9473).
