Return to RIA Applications Workshop 2000 Homepage

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to clarify the plans for a RIA applications workshop so that there is no confusion. Since the Durham RIA workshop did not have any discussion of applications of the Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA) project, people at Los Alamos and Livermore have gotten together to organize an applications workshop. Here is the coordinated plan.

October 30-31:
Los Alamos National Laboratory, The Lujan Center at the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center (LANSCE)
Organizers: David Vieira and Anna Hayes
Working groups:
Accelerator Transmutation of Waste (ATW):
Mark Chadwick (LANL) and Phil Finck (ANL) - conveners
Materials Science:
(conveners - TBD)
Radioisotope and Biomedical Applications:
Dennis Phillips (LANL) and Jose Alonso (LBNL) - conveners
Science-Based Stockpile Stewardship (SBSS):
Anna Hayes (LANL) and Lee Bernstein (LLNL) - conveners
(All sessions will be open)

November 8:
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Organizers: Dennis Slaughter and Lee Bernstein
Additional discussions of SBSS:
Dennis Slaughter (LLNL) and Anna Hayes (LANL) - conveners
Possible additional discussion of ATW and other ideas if suggested by those unable to attend either the Los Alamos or Berkeley meetings.

The timing for the Los Alamos workshop has been selected to directly precede the Application of Accelerators in Research and Industry CAARI 2000 international conference that will be held Nov. 1-4 in Denton, Texas and both of the above meetings will precede the DNP town meetings that are tentatively planned to be held at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on Nov. 9-12. We have been told that there are plans to have a working group on RIA applications at the LBNL nuclear structure/nuclear astrophysics town meeting. This will provide an opportunity for additional discussions and a chance to brief the wider community on the ideas coming out of the workshop.

We would like to encourage your participation in this workshop. The plan for the workshop is similar to that of the Durham meeting with informal presentations, brainstorming discussions, reality checks, followed by a summary session. We are still in the early stages of putting this together, so it is a good time to get involved. Please contact any of us or any of the above conveners, if you are interested in participating in any part of this workshop.

We are preparing a web page for the workshop which will contain more details about the workshop including a form to complete if you are interested in presenting an idea at the workshop and information about registration. Advanced registration will be required. Please feel free to pass this message on to others who might have an interest in the application of rare isotope beams.

With regards,

  Dave Vieira

  Anna Hayes
