Bicycle riders and badge checkpoints
Q: Why aren't bicycle riders required to stop at badge checkpoints i.e., Bikini Road and others?
A: The Laboratory decision for bicyclists
to not show badges at security condition (SECON) posts for this level of SECON
was based on the results of a vulnerability analysis conducted by Security and
Safeguards (S) Division shortly after the events of [Sept. 11, 2001]. The results
of that analysis indicated our attention should be centered around vehicle access
into sensitive areas around the Laboratory - and therefore our resources are
focused on that concern.
That decision is also consistent with the "graded approach" to security
that exists throughout the Lab. If additional SECON levels are implemented in
accordance with the SECON Implementation Plan, or at the direction of the Laboratory
Director, several additional protection efforts will be put into place which
will include the requirement for bicyclists/pedestrians to show required badges
at SECON access control posts.
We appreciate your concern about security, especially in light of current world events, and we encourage you and everyone to continue asking relevant questions. The more we all know and understand, the better stewards we become.
