Response to LauerThis letter is in response to Steve Lauer's concern regarding medical coverage while travelling outside of the United States.
The University of California/Laboratory's Select EPO plan (through United Healthcare) does provide coverage to its members while travelling in a foreign country in true emergency situations. Unfortunately, when Mr. Lauer contacted UHC with this question, he was mis-informed by the customer service representative that he spoke with. UHC is working with Mr. Lauer to resolve his claim.
Employees who travel extensively outside of the country may wish to consider the Options PPO plan, which provides coverage for foreign providers (non-network benefits) for nonemergency services. Changes to plans may only be made during Open Enrollment or if an employee moves out of the EPO area. Check your Summary Plan Description (available at http://atyourservice.ucop.edu/forms_pubs/categorical/eoc.html online) for details about your plan's coverage.
