Coyote raises safety concern

A coyote seen earlier this month around the Laboratory could pose a safety problem for workers, according to Emergency Management and Response (EM&R).

A coyote that was seen chasing cars, snapping at the wheels and generally behaving in an abnormal manner in early March also was seen near the area of the SM-30 warehouse at Technical Area 3, the Wellness Center, the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center, the Security and Safeguards (S) Division Office off Pajarito Road and the KSL Services salvage yard east of Diamond Drive.

Lab employees are reminded that the coyote shouldn’t be approached and/or given food. “If it is seen, call EM&R immediately at 7-6211 and give them the location where you spotted the animal,” said Dennis Armstrong.

Personnel who work in the SM-30 warehouse should close doors to the building by 5 p.m., if they have been opened during the day. “I don't think anyone wants to come to work in the morning and find the coyote sitting in their office,” he said.

“Usually wild animals get ‘friendly’ when people feed them,” Armstrong said. “This may be the case [with the coyote]. Everyone needs to remember these are wild animals no matter how tame or cute it looks.”
