Public meetings today on energy compensation act program

The federal Labor Department is hosting three public meetings this week in Española and Santa Fe regarding the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act.

The meetings are today and Thursday, said Karen Martinez of the Espanola Resource Center, which is hosting the meetings. Meeting times are 2 and 6 p.m., today, at Northern New Mexico Community College, 921 Paseo de Onate in Española; and 6 p.m., Thursday, at the Radisson Hotel, 720 N. St. Francis Drive, in Santa Fe.

The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act was created by Congress to provide compensation and medical benefits to current or former civilian employees who worked at certain government or privately owned facilities where atomic weapons were produced or tested.

Staff from the Resource Center will be at the public meetings to schedule appointments to assist workers (or survivors of deceased covered workers) in filing claims under the new Part E program.
