Los Alamos NewsLetter to be distributed this weekThe biweekly hard-copy Los Alamos NewsLetter for the week of March 14 is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands this week. Los Alamos scientists have developed a novel machining technique that uses a jet of solid carbon dioxide (CO2) to cool/lubricate the surface of metal parts and remove the cut material during machining. Called Snow-Machining, the process could someday eliminate the use of oil-based or synthetic chemical fluids for metal cutting and metal parts cleaning in industry. Read about this technology on Page 1. Chief Science Officer Tom Bowles recently highlighted scientific accomplishments and identified areas for improvement in his State of Science talk in the Administration Building Auditorium. Coverage of his talk can be found on Page 2. On Page 3, readers will find "Tech Transfer Tips," a series of informative briefs relating to technology transfer provided by the Technology Transfer (TT) Division. What is Appendix F? Why does Appendix F matter? How can employees contribute to outstanding Appendix F ratings? These question are answered on pages 4 and 5. Also on Page 5 is a memoriam on Manhattan Pioneer and Nobel Laureate Hans Bethe who died earlier this month. Newsmakers, service anniversaries, the Los Alamos NewsLetter's feedback feature called "So ... what do you think?" and more can be found on Pages 6 and 7. And on Page 8, read a reprint of an article from the February 2005 issue of R&D Magazine featuring Laboratory employee Wu-Chun Feng of the Advanced Computing Laboratory (CCS-1). Employees can access the Los Alamos NewsLetter at http://www.lanl.gov/news/newsletter/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so. Other Headlines Cyber Security Awareness Day is today at Lab more...
