Women in American Life screened FridayPart of Women's History Month at Lab The many contributions women have made to the nation's society and culture is the focus of a Diversity Cinema screening Friday as part of the Laboratory's celebration of national Women's History Month. A talk also is planned later this month. "Women in American Life," will be screened at 11:30 a.m., in the Physics Building Auditorium at Technical Area 3 and is open to the Laboratory work force. Produced by the National Women's History Project, the Diversity (DVO) Office is screening the three final portions of three short videos from the series. The screening is part of the Diversity (DVO) Office's "Diversity Cinema" initiative, which provides an occasional lunchtime opportunity to learn about heroes and historical figures from all cultures and backgrounds, as well as other diversity-related topics. This diversity education and awareness effort supports the Laboratory's Strategic Goal H, Agile Work force. The screening is about 60 minutes. There is no cost and free popcorn and soda will be provided. "Women Change America" is the theme of this year's national Women's History Month. "This video made me proud of the leadership and innovation of American women. The history books present this information from a man's point of view, so this introduced me to a different perspective," said Berylene Rogers of DVO. "I encourage everyone - women and men - to see this video." Rogers said the entire five-part series will be broadcast next week on LABNET Channel 10 and on desktop computers using Real Media stream and IPTV technology. Check the LABNET Channel 10 schedule at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/TIO/labnet10.htm online for times. The second scheduled Women's History Month event is at 11 a.m., Tuesday (March 22) when Rochelle Lari of Sandia National Laboratories will talk about emotional intelligence. According to Lari, emotional intelligence allows an employee to improve personal effectiveness; increase self-motivation; understand the power of managing emotions in the workplace; define emotional values, beliefs and attitudes; and facilitate positive conclusions. The talk is in the Physics Building Auditorium. Lari spoke at the Laboratory last year for Women's History Month; she is program leader for Sandia's Diversity Leadership program and is responsible for leading the development of strategies, initiatives and tactics in the areas of culture change, awareness development, organizational effectiveness and interventions, metrics management, marketing, and diversity communications and community interactions. "Rochelle's presentation during last year's Women's History Month was a huge success, and she is always funny and highly entertaining. We are really excited that she has agreed to come back to Los Alamos," said Lisa Gutierrez, DVO leader.
