Lab, UNM enter partnership in medical isotopes program

Center for Isotopes in Medicine to be created

Laboratory Director Pete Nanos, Gov. Bill Richardson and University of New Mexico President Louis Caldera, right, sign a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday in the Governor's Office in Santa Fe. The The MOU establishes the New Mexico Center for Isotopes in Medicine, a partnership between the Lab and UNM's Health Science Center. The center will be established at UNM. Nanos said the partnership will enhance New Mexico's economy, improve partnerships with UNM and create additional opportunities for Los Alamos' isotope production facility at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) at Technical Area 53. He also said that through the partnership, UNM's School of Pharmacy will help train the next generation of radiochemists, revitalizing UNM's radiochemistry program. Richardson congratulated Los Alamos and UNM for entering into the partnership and encouraged additional collaborations between the state's national labs and universities. Photo by LeRoy N.
