UC physicist Conway to talk about the Higgs Boson

John Conway, of the Department of Physics at the University of California, Davis will present a Director's Colloquium talk titled "Understanding the Higgs" at 1:10 this afternoon.

The colloquium is in the Physics Building Auditorium at Technical Area 3 and is open to badge holders. The talk also will be broadcast on LABNET Channel 9 and on desktop computers using Real Media and IPTV technology.

The search for the Higgs, which began in earnest 15 years ago with the Large Electron-Positron collider at CERN, is now being conducted at the Tevatron at Fermilab, and will soon move to the Large Hadron Collider at ERN. Conway's talk will explore the origins of the Higgs mechanism and particle, past, present and future searches for it, as well as speculations about what lies ahead.

He also will talk about recent developments in the search for the Higgs boson. The Higgs mechanism is believed to be the source of mass of all elementary particles, including those predicted by supersymmetric theories.

Conway received his doctoral degree in physics from the University of Chicago in 1987. He joined the faculty of UC, Davis in 2004, after nearly a decade as associate professor of physics at Rutgers University and five years as a research associate at the University of Wisconsin -- Madison. As a high-energy physicist, Conway's research interests are in studying the nature of fundamental particles and forces at the highest energies possible. The main focus of his research has been the search for new elementary particles at the CDF experiment at the Tevatron accelerator at Fermilab.
