Los Alamos NewsLetter to be distributed this week

The biweekly hard-copy Los Alamos NewsLetter for the week of Feb. 14 is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands this week.

The cover story in this issue describes a compact Los Alamos device called the High Energy Neutral Atom Imager that will be aboard a NASA mission to probe the very edge of the solar system.

On Page 2, Laboratory Director Pete Nanos discusses the Laboratory's behavior-based safety program. Also on Page 2, find out how to apply for the Lab's Machinist Apprenticeship Program. The deadline for applications is March 11.

Carolyn Mangeng, acting associate director for technical services (ADTS), recently talked about the mission of the directorate as well as accomplishments at a State of the Directorate talk. Read about this on Page 3. An article by Tom Bowles, the Laboratory's chief science officer, and a Department of Energy news release on the appointment of Samuel Bodman as the 11th secretary of the Department of Energy also is on Page 3.

Page 4 includes stories on new access rules for the Security and Safeguards (S) Division complex at Technical Area 3 and the most recent milestone reached by the Enterprise Project.

Waste experts at the Laboratory have eliminated nearly 98 percent of legacy mixed low-level waste. As of October 2004, the total amount of this type of waste was 11 cubic meters, down from as much as 850 cubic meters in the past. This story can be found on Page 5.

Newsmakers, the Los Alamos NewsLetter's feedback feature called "So ... what do you think?" and more can be found on Pages 6 and 7. And on Page 8, read how a Laboratory employee recently utilized her emergency medical technician training while responding to a collapsed victim.

Employees can access the Los Alamos NewsLetter at http://www.lanl.gov/worldview/news/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so.
