Caution urged when merging traffic from Pajarito Road security posts

Several near-miss incidents involving motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists at security condition posts on Pajarito Road have been reported to the Security and Safeguards (S) Division.

The near misses have resulted when vehicles are exiting Pajarito Road security condition (SECON) posts following badge checks.

According to Security Support (S-5), motorists exiting the SECON posts should be attentive to traffic attempting to merge into one lane for travel on Pajarito Road. Badgeholders should follow normal traffic laws when exiting the SECON post badge check areas as they merge into one lane.

Motorists should exit the badge check area slowly; the driver reaching the merge point first should be the first to enter the single traffic lane. If more than one vehicle arrives at the same time, the vehicle on the right goes first, according to S-5.

Bicyclists should follow the same traffic rules as vehicles. Vehicles should always yield to pedestrians and bicyclists even if [pedestrians, bicyclists] are not obeying traffic controls.

For more information, contact Mike Grimler or Sidney Branch of Security Support (S-5) at 5-7907 or 5-2245 respectively.
