Escort requirements for all-managers meetings

This is a reminder to all attendees for the all-managers meeting on Monday (Dec. 20). The meeting is unclassified and open to "Q" or "L" cleared badge holders. All uncleared attendees must be under escort at all times, with one "Q" or "L" cleared escort for each uncleared attendee. Uncleared individuals and their escorts will be asked to sit in the back right-hand side as they enter the auditorium.

"Project Management Toolbox" scheduled Jan. 25-27

A project management workshop focusing on individual skill building and the essential elements of project management is scheduled for Jan. 25-27, 2005 at the Laboratory.

This workshop will help Laboratory project management professionals

  • Build high performing teams
  • Establish project definitions that are clear and realistic
  • Understand the detailed steps in project planning
  • Optimize trade-offs
  • Develop a baseline plan and monitoring procedures
  • Track progress and fixing problems
  • Close out the project

Renewable energy and long term energy futures talk today

Michal Moore, senior fellow at the University of Calgary, will talk about "Renewable Energy and Long Term Energy Futures" at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 20, at the Pecos Conference Room (2nd floor), TA-0, Building 1325 (the building west of the Los Alamos Inn, north building).

As the former chief economist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado, a former regulator in the energy industry in California, and a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Energy, Environment and Economy at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Moore will give an economics based overview of long-term energy futures and a prognosis for the renewable energy sector.

Spent Fuel and High Level Waste seminar in January

A seminar on "Accelerated Testing of Materials in Spent Nuclear Fuel and High Level Waste Storage Systems" is scheduled for Jan. 27-28, in conjunction with C26 meetings during ASTM International Committee Week. The seminar, which is sponsored by the ASTM International Subcommittee C26.13 on Spent Fuel and High Level Waste, will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.

The seminar will address the role and understanding of accelerated testing and the identification of related important alteration mechanisms to qualify materials used for high-level waste glass and spent nuclear fuel interim dry storage systems and repositories. Materials relevant to interim storage, transport and geologic disposal of HLW and SNF will be considered. Both U.S. and international speakers will present relevant materials studies within their respective frameworks of storage and disposal concepts.

Skolnik training class

Skolnik Technical Training Institute will host the following class

“Special Four-Day Electronics I” training class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 24 - 27, and its continuation, which is the “Special Four-Day Advanced Electronics” training class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 7 - 10, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Albuquerque. Both of these special extended classes are designed to cover the subjects in depth and more detail. The Electronics I class will discuss in detail the basic electronics concepts in the areas of passive components and test equipment for engineers and technicians. The fee for this class is $1,535. The extended Advanced Electronics will cover in depth the practical design and troubleshooting skills over-and-above those taught in schools for engineers and technicians, and the fee for this class is $1,999.

Wellness Center news

Registration for Winter 2004 classes will begin at 7:30 a.m., Dec. 15. Winter classes begin Monday, Jan. 3. Some exercise classes do have pre-requisites that will need to be met prior to registration. If you have not taken a class at the Wellness Center within the past six months, call to schedule a bike test now. You must successfully complete the bike test before registering for any Level II or III class.

Call for business plans for 12th annual New Mexico Equity Capital Symposium

Technology Ventures Corp. is accepting business plans and executive summaries for technology companies that are interested in presenting at the 2005 Equity Capital Symposium. The New Mexico Equity Capital Symposium will be held May 18-19, 2005 in Albuquerque.

For the past 12 years the Equity Capital Symposium has served as a vehicle to connect growing or expanding technology companies with investment opportunities.

TVC project managers are currently soliciting business plans or executive summaries from New Mexico technology companies and entrepreneurs. Preference will be given to those opportunities that are based on technology developed by or with one of the national laboratories or research institutions in New Mexico.

The submission deadline for business plans is Jan. 5, 2005, but interested companies should contact TVC or a TVC project manager now for assistance with their business plan development.

Guest Express cards not accepted at mobile food trucks

Guest Express cards that are used to purchase food items at ARAMARK Corp. cafeterias are no longer being accepted at the Lean Cuisine mobile food trucks.

The cards work through payroll deduction: food items purchased with the cards at the Otowi Building cafeteria at Technical Area 3, and at the TA-53 and TA-55 cafeterias are deducted from employee payroll checks, explained George Esquivel, general manager of ARAMARK Corp., the Lab's cafeteria services operator.

The cards are available to University of California Laboratory employees only and will continue to be accepted at the three cafeterias.

Volunteer opportunities

The Pueblo of San Juan Department of Education needs volunteers who would like to provide academic support to Native American students attending the 2004-2005 After School Tutoring Program. The tentative schedule for tutoring is Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5 to 6:30 p.m., beginning Nov. 3. New Mexico Commission for the Blind - Volunteers are needed to read the Los Alamos Monitor to the blind. Using a touch-tone telephone, volunteers dial in and read a section of the paper into a computer system. Blind citizens can access the system and listen to readings of their favorite newspapers. Volunteers need a touch-tone phone, ability to read the paper into the system in the evening (twice a week) and need to attend a short training session to learn how to use the system. Online interactive Mathematica training

The Wolfram Education Group has its new, online mini-courses for Mathematica users. The mini-courses are live training classes in specific areas such as statistical analysis, numerical computation, technical publishing and applied programming with Mathematica. Mini-courses are taught by Wolfram developers, who present innovative and emerging technologies integrated into Mathematica products -- including webMathematica, gridMathematica, J/Link, .NET/Link and the Web Services Package.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
