Los Alamos NewsLetter to be distributed this week

The biweekly hard-copy of the Los Alamos NewsLetter for the week of Dec. 6 is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands this week. This is the only issue of the newsletter to be published this month.

Scientists from Los Alamos' National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Pulsed
Field Facility, working with colleagues from Tokyo, Argentina, Estonia and Florida, have discovered an ideal candidate for Bose-Einstein condensation in the ancient Chinese pigment, Han Purple. Read about this on Page 1.

Page 2 includes a message from University of California Vice President for Laboratory Management Robert Foley to Laboratory employees and some holiday safety tips from the American Red Cross.

The second in a series spotlighting the Lab's best practices in recruiting highlights can be found on Page 3. This week's article highlights the Spouse and Domestic Partner Career Assistance Program. Also on Page 3 is an article by the Laboratory's chief science officer, Tom Bowles, and an article reminding motorists to be aware of deer and animals on the roadways.

On Page 4, readers will find the procedures for closing up workspaces and offices during the Laboratory's annual winter closure, Dec. 24 through Jan. 2, 2005. A holiday greeting from Laboratory Director G. Peter Nanos also can be found on Page 4.

Space Data Systems (ISR-3) is keeping an eye out for the Jolly old man in the red suit, Santa Claus. Starting at 6 a.m., Dec. 24, ISR-3 will track Santa's progress as he heads into New Mexico. ISR-3, the Lab's satellite-tracking group, will give hourly updates via its Web site. Details are on the top of page 5. Also on Page 5, Fred Tarantino, principal associate director for the nuclear weapons program, summarizes some of the findings of the team that conducted an internal investigation of the July 14 laser incident in which an undergraduate researcher's eye was injured.

Newsmakers, December service anniversaries, The Los Alamos NewsLetter's feedback feature called "So … what do you think?" and more can be found on Pages 6 and 7.

Was Chicken Little right? In the week's spotlight on Page 8, Bruce Masse of Ecology (ENV-ECO) suggests that ancient myths -- such as Chicken Little and "the sky is falling" -- may depict actual celestial events.

Employees can access the Los Alamos NewsLetter at http://www.lanl.gov/worldview/news/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so.
