NMT represents Lab at "What's Next" expoThe Nuclear Materials Technology (NMT) Division recently represented the Laboratory at the first "What's Next" Expo sponsored by the Department of Energy. The division featured its exhibit on Beam (biology, electronics, aesthetics and mechanics) robotics. The science education initiative was created by Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham to inspire young people to pursue careers in math and science. "The DOE sites and their technology partners displayed an impressive assortment of presentations and demonstrations in an excellent format for middle schoolers. I think it is an excellent example of how DOE and others can reach out and hook young people on important and exciting endeavors in science and technology," said Andrew Montoya of Waste Management/Environmental Compliance (NMT-7). Nearly 50 interactive and instructional exhibits of cutting-edge science and technology exhibits were provided and staffed by science professional from 14 of DOE's national laboratories and a number of private companies. Abraham spoke about DOE's Scientists Teaching And Reaching Students science education initiative to more than 500 Chicago-area seventh and eighth graders. The STARS program enhances the training of America's mathematics and science teachers; boosts student achievement in science and math, especially in the critical middle school years; and draws attention to DOE scientists who have been instrumental in cutting edge discoveries. The second "What's Next" Expo is scheduled for fall 2005 in Albuquerque.
