United Blood Services and the Los Alamos Civitan Club are hosting a community blood drive beginning Wednesday through Friday in the Parish Hall of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3700 Canyon Road. Blood donations can be given from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. Employees who volunteer without compensation as blood donors during Laboratory-approved blood drives are excused from work with pay for the time necessary to accomplish this purpose. Time off for the blood donation must not exceed four hours. For accounting purposes, absences for blood donation are reported in quarter-hour increments for nonexempt employees and one-hour increments for exempt employees. The code for blood donatin is "BD." For more information, contact Louise Hassman at 662-8923.Updated 11/15/04 Guest Express cards not accepted at mobile food trucks Guest Express cards that are used to purchase food items at ARAMARK Corp. cafeterias are no longer being accepted at the Lean Cuisine mobile food trucks. The cards work through payroll deduction: food items purchased with the cards at the Otowi Building cafeteria at Technical Area 3, and at the TA-53 and TA-55 cafeterias are deducted from employee payroll checks, explained George Esquivel, general manager, of ARAMARK Corp., the Lab's cafeteria services operator. The cards are available to University of California Laboratory employees only and will continue to be accepted at the three cafeterias. For more information, call 7-3591. Updated 11/8/04 Skolnik training classes Skolnik Technical Training Institute will host the following classes: "Solder, Hands-On" training class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Dec. 1 - 2, at the Skolnik Solder Training Center in Albuquerque. This class is designed for anyone who would like to learn how to solder or to obtain a refresher in soldering. The tuition fee is $699. “Advanced General RF & µWave Measurement, Theory and Practice” training class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Dec 8 - 10, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Albuquerque. This class is designed to provide the practical RF design and troubleshooting skills for engineers and technicians. The fee for this class is $1,599. "Basics of Electricity, AC Circuits" training class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Dec. 13 - 15, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Albuquerque. The seminar is designed for technicians, assemblers, engineers, managers and anyone who would like to learn about electricity and electronic components. The training tuition is $1,150. Updated 11/1/04 Point of Contacts training on Friday Two sessions for Point of Contacts have been scheduled for Friday (Nov. 19) at Canyon School, Room 165. These sessions are for those POCs who have not taken the prior POC training. The Mandatory Training (No. 24182, Session 22 ) will be held from 8 to 9:45 a.m. This session concentrates on the POC responsibilities as listed in LIR 308-00-02.0, Laboratory Records Management, and is a mandatory requirement for all POCs. The Expanded POC Training (No. 24212, Session 14 ) will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. This session will expand into some records management topics and is not mandatory. There is no cost for these sessions and registration can be done through Virtual Training on the Lab's home page. The sessions will provide interested employees with the basic tools needed to continue to implement this LIR and answers to questions regarding its requirements. Updated 11/15/04 Basic Records and Information Management class on Nov. 23 In response to the issuance of LIR-308-00-02.0, Laboratory Records Management, the Information and Records Management group is offering a half day course on Basic Records and Information Management (Course No. 22477, Session 31) from 8 a.m. to noon, Nov. 23. The course will be held at Canyon School, Room 164. Other course dates will be scheduled as needed. This course will be presented in four short modules: Overview of Records Management and What is a Record; Records Management Drivers; What Are Retention Schedules; and Records Disposition - Transfer and Destruction. New Mexico Commission for the Blind - Volunteers are needed to read the Los Alamos Monitor to the blind. Using a touch-tone telephone, volunteers dial in and read a section of the paper into a computer system. Blind citizens can access the system and listen to readings of their favorite newspapers. Volunteers need a touch-tone phone, ability to read the paper into the system in the evening (twice a week) and need to attend a short training session to learn how to use the system. Updated 10/1/04 NMSU hosting 6th annual UAV conference The Technical Analysis and Applications Center at New Mexico State University is hosting the sixth annual UAV conference, "Coming of Age: Integration and Interdependence." The conference is Nov. 30 - Dec. 2, at the Tamaya Hyatt Regency Resort, located on the Santa Ana Pueblo, north of Albuquerque. This year's event is a three-day conference, featuring a day of classified sessions, followed by a two-day forum limited to U.S. Government, (Federal and State agencies) and their contractors, and law enforcement agencies. The conference will provide an understanding of the accelerated UAV requirements and technology environment leading to integration and interdependence. This knowledge is critical to all UAV stakeholders, including decision-makers, program managers, technology developers, users and regulators. "I continue to worry that some individuals are afraid to speak up about problems they see within NNSA or at our contractors," Brooks said in a message to NNSA personnel. He said NNSA personnel should never have to be worried about the perils of doing their jobs honestly, safely, and correctly. "People should not be afraid to bring problems to the attention of management, or be worried about facing retribution rather than receptiveness," said Brooks. The class is for deputy group leaders and above and is available through the Laboratory's Virtual Training Center. The class is designed to assist managers in preventing retaliation claims in the workplace and consists of four hours of videotaped instruction. The course number is 29039 and the Virtual Training Center has additional information on class meeting times. Updated 9/21/04 HR sponsors "Service Essentials for Everyone" Earlier this year, the Human Resources (HR) Division sponsored Moran Consulting to conduct a course titled, "Service Essentials for Everyone." This course was attended by all human resources staff and was well received. Due to the broad interest in this course, HR is offering it to anyone who is interested. The course is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday (Nov. 16). The cost is $390. This one-day training curriculum teaches fundamental customer service skills and understanding people's behavior styles. The six modules are: Understanding Yourself and Others, Developing an Attitude of Service Excellence, Identifying Customer Needs, Thoughtful Body Language and Words, Providing Uncompromising Service at Every Contact, Resolving Conflict and Exceeding Expectations. Updated 10/15/04 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.
