New electronic signs installed at security posts

New electronic OPEN/CLOSED signs have been installed and are in use on some Laboratory Security Condition (SECON) post structures. The signs match the ones in use at the Pajarito Road Access Control centers at both ends of Pajarito Road.

The SECON posts where the signs have been installed are (Adobe Acrobat Reader required)

  • SECON Post 1 located on Pajarito Road, just west of the Security and Safeguards (S) Division building, near Technical Area 3-39 (open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
  • SECON Post 8 located on Pajarito Road, behind the Otowi Building, adjacent to TA-3-38 (open 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.).
  • SECON Post 9 located on Bikini Atoll Road, adjacent to TA-3-142 (open 24 hours a day).

The lights were installed as an additional notification for motorists about the staffing status at each post structure. Use of the lights will help motorists know that the security condition post is staffed with a Laboratory protective force officer and to stop for a badge/identification check.

There are three configurations a motorist may encounter when approaching these SECON posts.

  1. No barrier and the green OPEN sign is lit
    • The post is staffed
    • Motorists must stop for an identification check
  2. No barrier and the red CLOSED sign is lit
    • The post is not staffed
    • Motorists may proceed through the post at a safe speed for conditions (i.e. weather, pedestrian traffic, etc.)
  3. A barrier is up (either swing gates or other barrier blocking access, i.e., other vehicles, orange barrels, etc.) and the red CLOSED sign is lit
    • The post is not staffed
    • Motorists may not pass

Posts 1 and 8 have swing gates, which are locked into place blocking the road when the posts are closed. When posts 1 and 8 are closed, the swing gates will be locked into position and the red CLOSED sign will be lit.

According to S Division, these are the current configurations for security condition level 3+. These configurations may or may not be the same during security conditions above 3+. Laboratory personnel will be notified of any changes in access control processes at these or other locations if security condition levels change.
