Los Alamos NewsLetter to be distributed this weekThe biweekly hard-copy of the Los Alamos NewsLetter for the week of Oct. 25 is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands this week. On Page 1, learn how the Laboratory is supporting the Department of Energy's artificial retina project by developing better ways to visualize and interpret the patterns of neural activity that result when the retina is stimulated. During a recent visit to Los Alamos, Department of Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham spoke to the Laboratory work force. In his talk, he thanked Lab employees for their continued scientific excellence. Read about this on Page 2. On Page 3, the Laboratory's chief science officer, Tom Bowles, describes the importance of Laboratory Directed Research and Development. November is open enrollment for University of California Laboratory employees and retirees. On Page 3, readers can find information on 2005 health-care premiums and United HealthCare meetings scheduled in November. Nancy Sauer, Roger Johnston and John Sarrao recently were honored by the Laboratory at a Fellows Prize award ceremony and colloquium. Coverage of the event can be found on Page 4. On Page 5, employees can learn about the Enterprise Project's Release One software product. Release One allows users to perform accounts payable and cash-management tasks using software provided by Oracle Corp. This week's spotlight on Page 8 features Clair Sullivan of Advanced Nuclear Technology (N-2). Sullivan, a former member of the University of Michigan's marching and hockey bands, volunteers her time as the Los Alamos High School's drumline instructor.
