United Way Fall Fiesta is Friday at TA-3

Other fundraising events scheduled

Remember when platform shoes and leisure suits were all the rage? And the brothers Gibb - the Bee Gees - were belting out platinum hits from "Saturday Night Fever." That was a different era, but on Friday, Laboratory workers can go back in time at the annual Fall Fiesta to raise funds for United Way.

The Fall Fiesta is from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., outside the SM-30 Warehouse at Technical Area 3. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased at the event or today at the Otowi Building cafeteria lobby. The tickets can be used to purchase food items and to participate in raffles and games.

The decade-themed Fall Fiesta is sponsored by Supply Chain Management (SUP) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) divisions, and includes live music by the Nomads, a dunk tank and a costume contest for the best costume by decade. All proceeds from the event will go to the Laboratory's 2005 United Way campaign. As of Wednesday, about $206,000 has been raised in pledges and donations in this year's campaign. The theme of this year's campaign, which ends Nov. 12, is "Making One Small Difference After Another."

For more information on the Fall Fiesta, contact Jan Frensdorf of SUP at 5-0464, or Leo Jaramillo of CFO at 7-3848.

The event will cause the area southwest of SM-30 and east of the parking garage to be closed to traffic and parking all day today and Friday. Handicapped parking is available on the ground level of the parking structure.

Other scheduled United Way fundraising events include

  • a tye-dye workshop Oct. 30 at Los Alamos Middle School open to the public. Admission is $10 for children and $15 for adults. Stephanie Hagelberg of Materials Dynamics (DX-2) is leading the workshop;
  • a bowlathon Nov. 6 at Big Rock Bowl in Española;
  • a dance Nov. 12 at the Ohkay Casino Dome at San Juan Pueblo, tickets are $13 per person;
  • Materials Science and Technology (MST) Division's second MST-bay online auction continues through Nov. 19 with a number of items available for bid. The deadline to donate auction items is Oct. 27, and Laboratory workers interested in donating or who have questions can call MST at 5-1131 or write to mstbay@lanl.gov online.

Laboratory organizations planning United Way fundraising events that are open to the work force are encouraged to list the event on the Community Relations (CRO) Office's United Way Web page. Call Debbi Wersonick of CRO at 7-7870 for special event guidelines.
