Smoke visible from nearby prescribed burnsTwo prescribed burns scheduled to begin today will cause smoke to be visible from Los Alamos, Santa Fe and other nearby areas. The Santa Fe National Forest is burning piles of thinned material in the Santa Fe Watershed area east of the city as part of a continuing project to reduce the chances of a catastrophic fire in the watershed, according to Dolores Maese of the Santa Fe National Forest. The prescribed burn will cause smoke to be visible in Santa Fe and Los Alamos. A second prescribed burn south of Camp May Road near Los Alamos involves burning 300 acres to reduce fuel loading and improve timber stands, said Maese. Smoke from this burn may be visible in Los Alamos and surrounding communities, she said. The prescribed burns will take place, weather permitting. For more information, contact Maese at 438-7877 or Dave Isackson at 753-7331 or see the Forest Service news release (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).
