Wednesday, September 22, 2004 Project management course starts next monthAn eight-session overview course on project management begins Oct. 5. The class meets from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Physics Building Auditorium at Technical Area 3 and will continue each Tuesday morning for eight weeks. The Project Management (PM) Division sponsors the course. The complete, eight-session Laboratory-based course will be offered four times during the 2005 fiscal year, said Bill Hamilton of the PM Division. Employees must take all eight sessions to meet the course requirements. The course provides an overview of basic project management concepts. It is expected to satisfy the Project Management Council's training requirements for a project specialist and also meets classroom hour requirements for those who wish to become eligible to take the Project Management Professional exam, Hamilton said. The Laboratory's Project Management Council assists Laboratory management in implementing project management processes and in helping employees achieve certification as project managers. The Laboratory is increasing the formality of project management and anticipates requiring that project managers who oversee construction projects or complex, nonconstruction projects with total budgets in excess of $20 million become certified as project management professionals by the Project Management Institute. "This course offers a big-picture look at the basic principles of project management for those who want to become certified as a project management professional," Hamilton said. "I also recommend this to managers of smaller projects who would like to improve their skills or who may eventually manage larger projects." Employees who take the course will need to purchase the following
