A prescribed burn in the Santa Fe National Forest is creating hazy skies east of Los Alamos and into the Espanola Valley. The prescribed burn will continue over several days, weather permitting, according to a news release from the forest service.
The prescribed burning of 2,000 acres started earlier this week and smoke has been visible from Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Los Alamos, Pecos and other nearby communities. As of mid-day Thursday, less than 300 acres had been burned, said Dolores Maese, a spokesperson for the Santa Fe National Forest.
She said the prescribed burn is being done to reduce hazardous fuels buildup and to reduce the threat of wildfire to nearby communities. People with smoke sensitivities should take precautions, Maese said.
