Hazy skies may be present todayPrescribed burn in Jemez wrapping up A prescribed burn in the Jemez Ranger District of Santa Fe National Forest may continue to cause hazy skies and smoke over the Los Alamos area today. The 4,000-acre hazardous fuels reduction project designed to reduce the threat of wildfire to the nearby residential areas of Vallecitos de los Indios and Sierra los Pinos was scheduled to be completed over the weekend. Fire personnel will be monitoring the burned area and patrolling for several days after burning is completed, said Dolores Maese, a spokesperson for the Santa Fe National Forest. "Smoke from the prescribed burn may be visible to residents in the Jemez area, including those in the nearby communities of Vallecitos de los Indios, Sierra Los Pinos, Thompson Ridge, La Cueva, Jemez Springs, Cochiti, Gilman and Ponderosa, and as far away as San Ysidro and Rio Rancho," said Maese. People with smoke sensitivities should take precautions, she added. Information on the prescribed burn is available by calling the Jemez Ranger District at (505) 829-3535 or Forest Supervisor's Office at (505) 438-7877.
