Low frequency radio science workshop starts Wednesday in Santa Fe"Science with Wavelengths on Human Scales," a celebration of the 74th birthday of astronomer Bill Erickson and low frequency radio science workshop begins Wednesday in Santa Fe. The workshop continues through Saturday at the Hilton Hotel in Santa Fe. The Laboratory is a co-sponsor of the workshop. Erickson has spent much of his career advancing long-wavelength radio science and is considered "the father of low frequency radio science." Erickson built several instruments at the Clark Lake Radio Observatory and currently operates the Bruny Island Radio Spectrometer in Tasmania. He also is responsible for designing the premier low-frequency (< 100 MHz) observing system in the world, operating at a frequency of 74 MHz on the Very Large Array. The workshop is being held in recognition of Erickson's many achievements and continuing inspiration in low frequency science and his approaching 74th birthday, said Bill Junor of Space and Remote Sensing Sciences (ISR-2). "Beyond the celebration, the workshop will bring together the community interests in low frequency radio science. The Long Wavelength Array is an instrument being proposed by the Southwest Consortium to be built in western Texas and New Mexico," said Mario Perez of International, Space and Response (ISR) Division. The workshop committee encourages women and minorities to attend and to participate in the event. A limited amount of financial support will be available to support attendance at the workshop and interested participants can register at the workshop. Priority is given to students and postdocs, Perez said. In addition to the Laboratory, the University of New Mexico, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory are co-sponsors.
