Nonconforming valves used at some DOE sites

The Department of Justice issued a press release indicating that an employee of Hunt Valve Co. Inc., in Salem, Ohio, has been charged with conspiracy and fraud in connection with providing nonconforming valves and materially false certifications. The valves provided by Hunt Valve Co. Inc., are used in containers that transport and store radioactive materials (including uranium hexafluoride). These valves were reported to have been produced from 1992 until 2001, and were manufactured or repaired using unapproved or improper techniques, and documents and certifications were falsified.

The nonconforming valves have been used extensively at a few Department of Energy sites, including DOE Portsmouth, Paducah and East Tennessee Technology Park sites, and may have been used at other DOE sites on a smaller scale.

The requirements contained in this notice apply to all organizations owning and/or using containers that transport or store radioactive materials; SSS and FMs that have procured, installed or used industrial or MIL-SPEC valves.
