DOE has new global threat reduction initiative

The Department of Energy recently began an effort to secure and remove high-risk nuclear and radiological materials that may pose a threat to the U.S. and other countries. The initiative is designed to accelerate the security and removal of proliferation-sensitive materials.

The Global Threat Reduction Initiative is being undertaken in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and other partners to ensure that such nuclear and radiological materials don't fall into the hands of terrorists or other rogue parties.

DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration will take a major role in the initiative, and NNSA has created a new office under its deputy administrator for defense nuclear proliferation to develop a threat-based, prioritized approach.
