The Wellness Center will re-open at 7 a.m., Monday, Aug. 2. For the week of Aug. 2 - 6, hours of operation will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. All returning customers are encouraged to visit the facility early in the week to complete the restart process. There will be limited use of locker rooms and showers. Exercise class information will follow soon. All sessions are open to the entire Laboratory work force, no fees or registration required. Stress Management Strategies: Employee Assistance Program staff will facilitate discussion about coping with uncertainty and change. This class will cover recognizing the signs of stress, stress management techniques and resources available for additional assistance for dealing with stress, 1 to 1:50 p.m., today (July 29), Occupational Medicine (HSR-2) Conference Room, TA-3, Bldg 1411. Updated 7/29/04 Fitness alternatives to Wellness Center available Several businesses in Los Alamos offer alternatives for Laboratory personnel unable to use the Wellness Center at Technical Area 3, which is closed until further. The Laboratory has suspended work operations and some facilities, such as the Wellness Center. Some of these businesses are providing special for Laboratory personnel during the Wellness Center closure. The businesses, their address and telephone numbers are provided below.
Updated 7/22/04 Wellness Center class The following Health Promotion class is open to the entire Laboratory work force. Register soon for Metabolic Rate Revealed, the class that includes a test of individual resting metabolic rate (RMR) for determining a personalized "calorie budget." Knowing your RMR can help with weight management, fitness goals and more. Two noon hour sessions will focus on diet and exercise techniques that can boost metabolic rate. Noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 5, and Thursday, Aug. 12 (2 weeks), Wellness Center Room 106. Fee: $20, to cover the cost of the individual metabolic testing equipment. Maximum enrollment = 15. Updated 7/28/04 YMCA offers Pajarito Punishment Prep class The 14th annual Pajarito Punishment will be held Aug. 14 as part of the Los Alamos Fat Tire Festival. This infamous cross country race has earned a reputation that lives up to its name. New for 2004 is a beginners race that traverses around town but does not go up the climb on Pipeline Road. It is a challenging course consisting of nearly 100 percent single track and ending on some steep switchbacks to the intersection with Pipeline Road and a well stocked aid station. To help prepare for the race, the Los Alamos YMCA, a Laboratory-sanctioned organization, is offering a co-ed Pajarito Punishment Prep class for ages 13 and up. If you are new to mountain bike racing and want to try this great, local race, then this class is for you. Taught by a pro racer, participants will learn racing basics including how to physically and mentally prepare for the race, what to expect at the race, racing strategies, what to bring on race day and how to recover. During the class, participants will ride the beginner race course and learn skills specifically needed for the terrain. The class requires previous experience on the mountain bike and a base level of fitness. The class will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Aug. 4 and 11. The fee is $45 for YMCA members and $62 for nonmembers. Updated 7/26/04 Skolnik training class Skolnik Technical Training Institute will be hosting a five day IPC/EIA J-STD-001C Certification training class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 16 - 20 at Skolnik's soldering training facility in Albuquerque. This IPC/EIA J-STD-001C class is designed to provide soldering certification to assemblers, technicians and/or engineers, for end-product acceptance criteria of high reliability electronic assemblies. The tuition fee is $1,149. Skolnik also will host a four day Enhanced IPC-A-610C Solder Certification training seminar from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 23 - 26 at Skolnik’s soldering training facility in Albuquerque. This IPC-A-610C class is designed to provide soldering certification to assemblers, technicians and/or engineers, for end-product acceptance criteria of high reliability electronic assemblies. JIT switches paper source Because of a recent shortage of recycled, white, 20-pound bond paper used in desktop printers and copiers, the Lab is switching its source to Boise Office Products. This change should allow for a smooth transition for Just in Time System users, while maintaining quality products and lower cost. Refer to the Boise Office Products catalog on the JIT home page. The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.
