Updated 7/20/04 YMCA offers Pajarito Punishment Prep class The 14th annual Pajarito Punishment will be held Aug. 14 as part of the Los Alamos Fat Tire Festival. This infamous cross country race has earned a reputation that lives up to its name. New for 2004 is a beginners race that traverses around town but does not go up the climb on Pipeline Road. It is a challenging course consisting of nearly 100 percent single track and ending on some steep switchbacks to the intersection with Pipeline Road and a well stocked aid station. To help prepare for the race, the Los Alamos YMCA, a Laboratory-sanctioned organization, is offering a co-ed Pajarito Punishment Prep class for ages 13 and up. If you are new to mountain bike racing and want to try this great, local race, then this class is for you. Taught by a pro racer, participants will learn racing basics including how to physically and mentally prepare for the race, what to expect at the race, racing strategies, what to bring on race day and how to recover. During the class, participants will ride the beginner race course and learn skills specifically needed for the terrain. The class requires previous experience on the mountain bike and a base level of fitness. The class will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. July 21 and 28, and Aug. 4 and 11. The fee is $45 for YMCA members and $62 for nonmembers. Note: First class will meet at the YMCA Child Care Center.
