Omega Bridge repair work this weekend

Work to impact traffic leading into Technical Area 3

Repair work is scheduled for this weekend on the Los Alamos Canyon Bridge - also known as the Omega Bridge - and will affect traffic on Diamond Drive leading into Technical Area 3.

On Saturday, the bridge's damaged, segmental expansion device will be removed and replaced. Although the expansion device does not serve a structural purpose for the bridge, it does function to span the opening between the bridge and the adjacent roadway. It also seals the bridge foundation against water runoff from the road. The device can compress and expand to meet the expansion and contraction of the bridge resulting from daily and seasonal temperature changes throughout the year.

The segmental expansion device has been damaged over the years from the wear and tear of traffic and from plows clearing snow from the bridge, said project leader Doug Volkman of Utilities and Infrastructure (FWO-UI).

KSL Services has a work order in the amount of $68,300 to procure the expansion device, perform the work, maintain traffic control and conduct other miscellaneous tasks.

The work will restrict the four lanes of the bridge to two lanes, one lane for each direction of travel. Infrequent, brief traffic stoppage of traffic also may be necessary for set up, take down or other work activities, Volkman added.

Work is scheduled to take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, although work hours might be modified as necessary. For more information, contact Volkman at 7-6238.
