JIT switches paper source

Because of a recent shortage of recycled, white, 20-pound bond paper used in desktop printers and copiers, the Lab is switching its source to Boise Office Products. This change should allow for a smooth transition for Just in Time System users, while maintaining quality products and lower cost. Refer to the Boise Office Products catalog on the JIT home page. The new part numbers are as follows:

The contacts administration team will convert established automatically generated or "autogen" orders.

Orders placed with Unisource the week of June 5 will be filled the week of June 12 - to cancel such an order, contact Unisource and re-order through Boise.

Microsoft Office presentation is today

Join Microsoft's technical experts in exploring the new features in Office for Mac 2004. The presentation will be from 8:45 to 11:30 this morning at the MSL Auditorium.

ESD and Holman's will briefly discuss Apple Hardware offerings after which Microsoft will present an overview of the new versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The primary focus of the discussion will be on the new features. Tips and techniques to get the most out of Office also will be provided.

Presentations are open to all badge-holders. There are no charges associated with attending. Reservations are not required, but seating is limited and provided on a first-come first-serve basis.

The following classes are being offered by National Instruments in New Mexico for May and June:

The LabVIEW Basics I course shows how to develop test and measurement, data acquisition, instrument control, datalogging and measurement analysis applications using LabVIEW. The LabVIEW Basics II course is a logical extension of Basics I and shows how to design complete, stand-alone applications in LabVIEW.

July 26 - 28: LabVIEW Jump-Start with IEEE-488 and RS-232: The primary focus is learning how to use LabVIEW to control instruments, acquire their data, convert the data to usable numeric form, store and retrieve the data, and analyze and display the data. Learn LabVIEW programming hands-on, learn how the IEEE-488 and RS-232 systems work and how to use them the way they were designed to be used, learn how to program LabVIEW with IEEE-488 and RS-232 devices using LabVIEW. July 29 - 30: Creating Sophisticated Optimized LabVIEW Instrumentation Programs from Scratch: Attendees develop basic LabVIEW IEEE-488 programs from an HP instrument manual sample BASIC program. Then the attendees optimize the programs, modularize the programs, and create a sophisticated LabVIEW program to select the created program modules as desired to acquire data, analyze the data, store the data and display the data. Cost: $1,000

August 2 - 4: LabVIEW Intermediate Level Jump-Start Course: learn more sophisticated LabVIEW methods of programming such as objects and panels that appear and disappear as needed, programming special effects in LabVIEW, choice of suitable programming architectures, improving LabVIEW operation and memory use, and special topics such as waveform acquisition, customizing LabVIEW programs and more. Cost: $1,200

August 5 - 6: IEEE-488, RS-232 and the Computer Course: learn IEEE-488 and RS-232 common terms, configuration, communication with instruments from the computer keyboard, how the IEEE-488 and RS-232 actually work, and how to work them the way they were designed to work properly. This hands-on course is for people who already know a computer language and know some of the IEEE-488 and RS-232 concepts, but really need to know the correct way to use them, the way they were designed to be used with instruments. Cost: $1,000

Amateur Radio Licensing exams on July 20

The Los Alamos Amateur Radio Club is sponsoring Amateur Radio Licensing exams for all classes of licenses. Exams will be given at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, at the White Rock Training Center. Pre-registration is not required. All applicants should bring a photo ID, a simple calculator and $12 for the ARRL exam fee. License upgrades will require the original and a copy of your current amateur license and any CSCEs for credit. All other required forms will be provided at the exam session.

Potential motor safety problem with Alcatel vacuum pumps

Vacuum pumps include all Alcatel Pascal Series 5-21m3/h pumps manufactured prior to serial number 408960. Models concerned include 1005,1010,1015,1021 SD, C1, 2005SD, I, C1 and H1, 2010SD, I, C1 and C2, 2015SD, I, C1, C2 and H1, 2021SD, I, C1 and C2 (all models concerned have a white motor).

Vacuum seminar in October

Varian Vacuum Technologies will present a seminar on vacuum technology from 8 a.m. to noon, Oct. 13 at the Physics Building Auditorium. The noncommercial presentation is about vacuum technology in general and is applicable to all brands of vacuum equipment.

Workbooks and refreshments will be provided by Varian. Subjects covered include: Brief introduction to vacuum technology, system pressure, total gas load, materials selection, sstem pumping speed, gauging, system operation, Troubleshooting and a question and answer session.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
