Student Symposium deadline extended to Friday

The Student Symposium registration deadline has been extended to Friday. The symposium is scheduled for Aug. 3 and 4 at the Best Western Hilltop House located at 400 Trinity Drive.

The symposium is an opportunity for students to present their research and projects via a poster presentation or technical talk. In addition to the presentations, there will be two professional development seminars: "Exploring the topic on every graduates mind: How to get a job at Los Alamos National Laboratory," and "A Career in Science and Engineering: Why go to graduate school and how to go about it." The poster presentations and technical talks are free and open to the public, said Carole Rutten of the Education Programs Office (STB-EPO).

The day-and-a-half event will highlight student work, and includes professional development seminars, a continental breakfast and lunch, and will conclude with symposium awards, distinguished student and mentor awards, a keynote address by Los Alamos High School graduate Dr. Randall Hyer and the induction of the 2005 Students Association officers.

A number of seminars are available to help students prepare for the event. A list of scheduled seminars, the full schedule for the symposium and registration information is at http://education.lanl.gov/symposium online.

Rutten said there also are several classes to assist in preparing for the symposium. The following are the list of courses:

  • How to prepare a poster - 1-2 p.m., July 20, Room 167, Canyon Complex
  • Presentation Skills Class - 1-2 p.m., July 27, Room 167, Canyon Complex
