Friday, July 2, 2004 Livermore scientists win early career awardLawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientists Edmond Chow and Christine Orme recently received 2002 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers as science's foundation for the future. The award program recognizes outstanding scientists and engineers who, early in their careers, show exceptional potential for leadership at the frontiers of knowledge. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on scientists and engineers beginning their independent careers. Orme, a physicist in Livermore's Chemical Biology and Nuclear Science Division of the Chemistry and Materials Science Directorate, was honored "for her work in understanding the physical mechanisms of biomineralization and the development of force microscopy-based methods of investigating mineralization at the nanoscale. " Chow, a computer scientist in the Computation Directorate, was honored "for research into preconditioning methods for discretized partial differential equations that has enabled scientists at [Lawrence Livermore] to perform implicit simulations that were previously impossible. His planned research will produce still more sophisticated techniques; these will greatly facilitate the manner in which numerical simulation methods are developed and applied." Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is operated by the University of California. To read a Livermore news release, click here. Other Headlines Happy Fourth of July more...
