Livermore scientist selected for NASA astronaut program

A Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientist recently was selected as a 2004 candidate for NASA's astronaut program. Jose Hernandez is an electrical engineer on leave from Livermore, which is operated by the University of California.

"This was the ultimate goal," Hernandez said of his astronaut selection. "I am very excited and very honored to be selected. I can't wait to begin my training." Hernandez had interviewed for the NASA astronaut program on two previous occasions.

Two former Los Alamos technical staff members, Don Pettit and John Phillips, are in the NASA astronaut program.
