Lab marks Gay Pride Month with scheduled events

Informational video airs at noon Thursday

The Laboratory's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) Diversity Working Group is sponsoring several educational events this month in conjunction with national Gay Pride Month.

The first scheduled event is at noon, Thursday in the Materials Science Laboratory Auditorium at Technical Area 3 where a video focusing on intersex issues will be shown. The video provides an introduction to intersex, which is a general term used to denote a variety of conditions in which a person is born with mixed sex anatomy.

For information about the video, go to http://www.fanlight.com/catalog/films/368_fdnh.shtml online.

"We rely on teamwork to accomplish our work at the Laboratory. We need to understand the concerns and issues important to our co-workers," said Lisa Gutierrez, Diversity (DVO) Office leader.

"This month's schedule of events is designed to educate us so we can be more comfortable with all employees and more productive in the workplace," Gutierrez added.

The presentations are aligned with the Laboratory's institutional values and strategic goals of teamwork, [a] flexible work force and mutual respect. They are part of DVO's "Something to Think About" diversity curriculum co-sponsored by the LGBTI DWG and the Diversity Office, said Gutierrez. All the presentations are open to the work force and their invited guests.

Several more events are scheduled in June, including a Roland West workshop on June 16, two panel discussions and the Pride on the Plaza march in Santa Fe. Co-sponsored by the LGBTI DWG, Pride on the Plaza will feature a recruitment booth that provides information on the Laboratory as an employer. For more information on the plaza event, go to http://www.santafehra.org/Gay%20Pride%20Plaza.html online.
