Radiochemistry talk kicks off Seaborg Institute seminars June 8

The first in a summer series of 13 weekly seminars on actinide science and related topics is scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday (June 8) in the Materials Science Laboratory Auditorium at Technical Area 3.

Moses Attrep and Doug Berning of Isotope and Nuclear Chemistry (C-INC) will discuss "Radiochemistry at Los Alamos" in the first of the seminar series, which is sponsored by the Laboratory's Glenn T. Seaborg Institute for Transactinium Science.

David L. Clark of the Nuclear Materials Technology (NMT) Division, director of the Seaborg Institute, said the overview seminars will tackle a variety of key topics of interest to Laboratory students and staff. The talks are open to all employees and take place from 10 a.m. to noon, every Tuesday for the next 13 weeks.

Now in its fourth summer, the Seaborg Institute overview seminars are an important component of the Laboratory's and the institute's educational goals. The institute this summer is sponsoring 20 undergraduate and graduate students in several Laboratory divisions, including Nuclear Materials Technology (NMT), Chemistry (C), Materials Science and Technology (MST), Dynamic Experimentation (DX), Theoretical (T), Bioscience (B) and Health, Safety and Radiation Protection (HSR) divisions.

Future seminars will focus on f-element chemistry, nuclear and radiochemistry, thermodynamics, electronic structure, materials science and high-explosives science and technology.

The Seaborg Institute will distribute a detailed list of future seminar topics and presenters. Associate directors of the Seaborg Institute are Gordon Jarvinen of NMT and Albert Migliori of MST. Focus area leaders are Kevin John and David Morris of C Division.

More information about Tuesday's seminar is available by calling the Seaborg Institute at 5-7214.
