Wellness Center classes

Suitcase Fitness includes a demonstration of portable exercise equipment that packs easily into even the smallest of carry-on luggage, along with ideas for "sneaking" exercise into a busy travel or vacation schedule. On-the-go snack suggestions also included. Noon to 12:45 p.m., Wednesday, June 9, Occupational Medicine Conference Room.  Fee: $18, for participants who wish to purchase a Xertube and Xercise Band travel pack. Bring check payable to the University of California on the day of class.

There are just a few spaces left in Introduction to Meditation (Noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 8 and June 15) and Stress Management to Relax the Mind and Body (2 to 4 p.m., Thursday, June 10).

BASICS for Type 2 Diabetes. Featuring highlights from the International Diabetes Center curriculum, this course will provide participants the tools to understand and take care of their diabetes day to day. Immediate family members also are encouraged to register. Taught by Wellness Center registered dietitian and nurse/fitness specialist. Minimum enrollment: 8; Maximum: 10. No fee. Each participant will receive a free booklet covering the management of Type 2 diabetes. Noon to 1 p.m., Wednesdays, June 2 - July 7 (6 weeks)

N Division talk today

The Nuclear Nonproliferation (N) Division is hosting a talk today by Eric Haseltine, Associate Director of Research for the National Security Agency. The title of his talk is "How to Win a Nobel Prize." The talk begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Physics Building Auditorium.

10 K-A-Day group walk today

The second week of the 10 K-A-Day Walking Program is in full swing, and participants are invited to join Wellness Center staff for a group walk, as part of the weekly "Walking Wednesdays." Walkers should meet at noon today outside of the MSL building (corner of Diamond Drive and Pajarito Road) for a trail walk in the south Technical Area 3 area. Good walk/hike footwear recommended. Parking area near old medical clinic building closing

The parking lot north of the former Occupational Medicine (HSR-2) clinic is closing to parking beginning June 1, as part of a decommissioning and decontamination of the former health clinic. Occupational Medicine has relocated within Technical Area 3 off Pajarito Road and west of the Diamond Drive-Pajarito Road intersection.

Workers who will be decommissioning the former HSR-2 building need to use the north parking lot as a staging area and to access the site, necessitating the closure. Signs will be posted to alert Laboratory personnel that this parking lot will no longer be available for parking. The work is scheduled to be completed the week of July 12.

Sign language classes at Lab

American Sign Language classes are being offered at the Lab this summer. The classes are from noon to 1 p.m. in the Occupational Medicine (HSR-2) conference room. The dates are

  • July 20 and 22
  • July 27 and 29
  • Aug. 3 and 5

Firecracker Family Fun Run July 3 in Los Alamos

The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is accepting registrations for its annual Independence Day Firecracker Family fun run. The run begins at 8:30 a.m., July 3, at the YMCA downtown.

The 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) run includes prizes for winners in men's and women's and age categories, said John Marble of the Los Alamos Family YMCA. There also is race-day registration from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. The cost is $10 for the first YMCA family member; $8 for the second; and $6 for each subsequent family member. All family members must be registered at the YMCA to receive family rates for the run. T-shirts will be given to the first 100 entrants.

The Los Alamos Family YMCA is located at 1450 Iris St.

Procession planned Thursday

Motorists should watch for walkers

About 40 people are taking part in a procession on Thursday (June 3) near Technical Area 3. The Archdiocese of Santa Fe is sponsoring the procession.

Walkers will be in the area of West Jemez Road and Diamond Drive between 11 a.m. and noon before proceeding to Rendija Canyon, according to the Security and Safeguards (S) Division, which is aware of the event.

Laboratory workers and other motorists should use caution in the area of the pilgrimage.

Skolnik training

Skolnik Technical Training Institute will host a "Solder, Hands-On" training class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 8 and 9, at the Skolnik Solder Training Center in Albuquerque. This class is designed for anyone who would like to learn how to solder or to obtain a refresher in soldering. The tuition fee is $599.

Skolnik also will host a "Basics of Electricity (DC Circuits)" training seminar from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 15 - 17, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Albuquerque. The seminar targets technicians, assemblers, engineers, managers and anyone who would like to learn about electricity and components. The tuition fee is $999.

Skolnik will be holding the “Advanced General RF & µWave Measurement, Theory and Practice” training seminar from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 23 - June 25, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Albuquerque, NM. The “Advanced RF” course is designed to provide the practical RF design and troubleshooting skills for engineers & technicians. The tuition fee is
$1,399.

Volunteers needed for Senior Appreciation Night

Volunteers are needed to help with the community-sponsored graduation party known as Senior Appreciation Night. The event will be from 4 p.m. until 4 a.m., beginning Saturday (June 5). Volunteer shifts include a two to three hour position either punching tickets, monitoring the soft toy usage, helping at the BBQ, belaying at the Climbing Wall, monitoring the Walkup Center, counting money at the auction, picking up litter, chaperoning the dance, roller skating or late movies, sharing a talent at the Carnival or helping clean up after the breakfast.

Mesa Public Library film series continues Thursday

A great new series of movies has started at Mesa Public Library on the first Thursday of each month. Science fiction is a very popular literary genre and has been the basis for some great movies. The next feature is at 6 p.m., Thursday (June 3), written by Michael Crichton, filmed in 1971, Rated G. (Sorry, we cannot advertise the title outside the library.)

Film description - A U.S. Army satellite (Scoop VII) falls to earth near Piedmont, New Mexico. The recovery team experiences difficulties as it becomes clear that the satellite has performed its intended function all too well, and has brought back something from space. A team of scientists is assembled in a high-tech, underground facility to identify and defeat the "enemy" before it is too late.

MathWorks seminar on June 7

The MathWorks fourth annual “MathWorks Day” is June 7 in Albuquerque. This will be a free half-day seminar from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wyndham Hotel, 2910 Yale Blvd. Southeast.

Project management toolbox scheduled in June

A project management toolbox class is scheduled for June 15-17 at the Lab. The three-day workshop focuses upon individual skill building, and addresses the following elements of project management:

  • Building high performing teams
  • Establishing project definitions that are clear and realistic
  • Understanding the detailed steps in project planning
  • Optimizing trade-offs
  • Developing a baseline plan and monitoring procedures
  • Tracking progress and fixing problems
  • Closing out the project

Learning is reinforced by application case studies throughout the workshop. The course is customized for the Laboratory and presented by Erika Jones and Associates. Franklin Covey workshops in June

Two, half-day Franklin Covey workshops are scheduled for June 8 and 15 in Los Alamos. The workshops are from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Pajarito Room of Fuller Lodge downtown.

Leadership Development Association of Los Alamos is conducting the workshop; the fee is $299, which includes the Franklin Planner Starter kit ($259 without the starter kit).

Registration underway for summer camp at Los Alamos Family YMCA

The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is now registering youths for its annual summer camp. The camp runs from June 7 through Aug. 20.

The "Day Camp Down Under" is for children between ages 5 and 12 and is in session from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at Mountain Elementary School. Activities include field trips, guest speakers, rock climbing, racquetball, library and aquatic center trips and arts and crafts activities.

Cognitive systems workshop in June

Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico are co-hosting the Second Annual Workshop on Cognitive Systems: Human Cognitive Models in System Design workshop. The workshop will explore current thinking and activities with regard to the understanding of cognitive systems. Topics to be addressed in the workshop include:

  • differentiation between cognitive, AI and expert systems, as well as other related fields
  • ongoing research and developments in cognitive systems
  • principles in conceptualization and design of cognitive systems
  • opportunities for the advancement of cognitive systems

The workshop is June 29 - July 1 in Santa Fe. It will combine presentations from leaders in the field and breakout sessions in which selected issues will be considered at some depth.

Vacuum seminar in October

Varian Vacuum Technologies will present a seminar on vacuum technology from 8 a.m. to noon, Oct. 13 at the Physics Building Auditorium. The noncommercial presentation is about vacuum technology in general and is applicable to all brands of vacuum equipment.

Workbooks and refreshments will be provided by Varian. Subjects covered include: Brief introduction to vacuum technology, system pressure, total gas load, materials selection, sstem pumping speed, gauging, system operation, Troubleshooting and a question and answer session.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
