The parking lot north of the former Occupational Medicine (HSR-2) clinic is closing to parking beginning Tuesday, June 1, as part of a decommissioning and decontamination of the former health clinic. Occupational Medicine has relocated within Technical Area 3 off Pajarito Road and west of the Diamond Drive-Pajarito Road intersection. Workers who will be decommissioning the former HSR-2 building need to use the north parking lot as a staging area and to access the site, necessitating the closure. Signs will be posted to alert Laboratory personnel that this parking lot will no longer be available for parking. The work is scheduled to be completed the week of July 12. Updated 5/27/04 Firecracker Family Fun Run July 3 in Los Alamos The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is accepting registrations for its annual Independence Day Firecracker Family fun run. The run begins at 8:30 a.m., July 3, at the YMCA downtown. The 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) run includes prizes for winners in men's and women's and age categories, said John Marble of the Los Alamos Family YMCA. There also is race-day registration from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. The cost is $10 for the first YMCA family member; $8 for the second; and $6 for each subsequent family member. All family members must be registered at the YMCA to receive family rates for the run. T-shirts will be given to the first 100 entrants. Updated 5/27/04 Procession planned June 3 Motorists should watch for walkers About 40 people are taking part in a procession on June 3 near Technical Area 3. The Archdiocese of Santa Fe is sponsoring the procession. Walkers will be in the area of West Jemez Road and Diamond Drive between 11 a.m. and noon before proceeding to Rendija Canyon, according to the Security and Safeguards (S) Division, which is aware of the event. Updated 5/27/04 Skolnik training Skolnik Technical Training Institute will host a "Basics of Electricity (DC Circuits)" training seminar from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 15 - 17, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Albuquerque. The seminar targets technicians, assemblers, engineers, managers and anyone who would like to learn about electricity and components. The tuition fee is $999. Skolnik also will host a "Solder, Hands-On" training class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 8 and 9, at the Skolnik Solder Training Center in Albuquerque. This class is designed for anyone who would like to learn how to solder or to obtain a refresher in soldering. The tuition fee is $599. Updated 5/27/04 Volunteers needed for Senior Appreciation Night Volunteers are needed to help with the community-sponsored graduation party known as Senior Appreciation Night. The event will be from 4 p.m. until 4 a.m., beginning June 5. Volunteer shifts include a two to three hour position either punching tickets, monitoring the soft toy usage, helping at the BBQ, belaying at the Climbing Wall, monitoring the Walkup Center, counting money at the auction, picking up litter, chaperoning the dance, roller skating or late movies, sharing a talent at the Carnival or helping clean up after the breakfast. Featuring highlights from the International Diabetes Center curriculum, this course will provide participants the tools to understand and take care of their diabetes day to day. Science fiction is a very popular literary genre and has been the basis for some great movies. The next feature is at 6 p.m., June 3, written by Michael Crichton, filmed in 1971, Rated G. (Sorry, we cannot advertise the title outside the library.) Film description - A U.S. Army satellite (Scoop VII) falls to earth near Piedmont, New Mexico. The recovery team experiences difficulties as it becomes clear that the satellite has performed its intended function all too well, and has brought back something from space. A team of scientists is assembled in a high-tech, underground facility to identify and defeat the "enemy" before it is too late. The three-day workshop focuses upon individual skill building, and addresses the following elements of project management:

Updated 4/12/04 Registration underway for summer camp at Los Alamos Family YMCA The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is now registering youths for its annual summer camp. The camp runs from June 7 through Aug. 20. The "Day Camp Down Under" is for children between ages 5 and 12 and is in session from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at Mountain Elementary School. Activities include field trips, guest speakers, rock climbing, racquetball, library and aquatic center trips and arts and crafts activities. Updated 2/26/04 Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B). The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.
