Los Alamos NewsLetter to be distributed this week

The biweekly hard-copy newsletter for the week of May 24 is scheduled to be in mailboxes and newsstands this week.

On the cover, Los Alamos scientists have proposed a new theory to explain the movement of vast energy fields in giant radio galaxies. The theory could be the basis for a whole new understanding of the ways in which cosmic rays propagate and travel through intergalactic space.

William Press, deputy director for science and technology programs, welcomes new students arriving at the Laboratory on Page 2. Also on that page is a statement issued by the University of California on the National Research Council report on "Maintaining High Scientific Quality at Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories."

On Page 3 is a story on how UC employees, retirees and former employees can now view and update their beneficiaries online and a reminder on the Laboratory's policy on campaigning on Lab property.

Pages 4 and 5 hold helpful information for the more than 1,500 students who began arriving in Los Alamos this month to spend the summer working at the Laboratory.

Newsmakers, May service anniversaries and this month in history can be found on Pages 6 and 7, and the spotlight on Page 8 features Ken Alvar of Safeguards Science and Technology (N-1) who brought together his love for photography and flowers to form Floral Fotos, a small photography business.

Employees can access the Los Alamos NewsLetter at http://www.lanl.gov/worldview/news/lanl_archive.shtml online or obtain additional copies at the bright blue distribution boxes throughout the Lab. Organizations receiving too many or not enough should call the mailroom at 7-4166. If your organization's administrator is not putting the newsletter in your mailboxes, please encourage him or her to do so.
