Citizens' Advisory Board meeting this week in Taos

The Northern New Mexico Citizens' Advisory Board to the Department of Energy for the Laboratory is meeting in Taos beginning Thursday.

The meeting continues through Saturday in the Sagebrush Inn and Conference Center, 1508 Paseo del Pueblo Sur.

Thursday's session is a board retreat with new member orientation and facilitated meetings, which continue on Friday.

The public comment portion of the meeting is on Saturday morning.

Hecker to talk about North Korea on May 24

The public is invited to attend a talk on "The North Korean Nuclear Crisis" by Sig Hecker, former Laboratory Director and current Lab Senior Fellow. Hecker will report on his recent trip to North Korea’s nuclear complex at Yongbyon and give a perspective of how governments are dealing with the current nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula.

The talk will be given at a meeting of the Los Alamos Committee on Arms Control and International Security at 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 24, in Graves Hall at the Christian Education Building, United Church, 2525 Canyon Road.

MathWorks seminar on June 7

Talk on weapons safeguard this evening

Project management toolbox scheduled in June

A project management toolbox class is scheduled for June 15-17 at the Lab. The three-day workshop focuses upon individual skill building, and addresses the following elements of project management:

  • Building high performing teams
  • Establishing project definitions that are clear and realistic
  • Understanding the detailed steps in project planning
  • Optimizing trade-offs
  • Developing a baseline plan and monitoring procedures
  • Tracking progress and fixing problems
  • Closing out the project

Learning is reinforced by application case studies throughout the workshop. The course is customized for the Laboratory and presented by Erika Jones and Associates. Mesa Public Library "Authors Speak" continues on May 27

The Los Alamos County Public Library Authors Speak series hosts New Mexican writers of all genres on the fourth Thursday of each month. Steven Gould, Albuquerque area author of numerous science fiction short stories and novels, is the next guest author at 5:30 p.m., May 27 in the upstairs Rotunda. He has been publishing fiction since 1980 when his first short story, "The Touch of Their Eyes," came out in Analog. Since that time, he has published more short fiction in Analog, Amazing, Asimov's and various anthologies. His most recent novels include Blind Waves, Wildside, Helm, Jumper and Greenwar, co-authored with his wife and fellow science fiction writer Laura Mixon. Wildside was the recipient of the Hal Clement Award for Best Young Adult Science Fiction given by the Golden Duck Foundation and was on the American Library Association Best Book List, YA division. Jumper was one of the top 100 banned books in America from 1990-1999. (Until the Harry Potter Books knocked it out of the running.) The sequel to Jumper, Reflex, will be out this November.

The Authors Speak series is a joint endeavor of the Library Board, library staff, Friends of Mesa Public Library and volunteers.

Wellness Center news

Wellness Center 20th Anniversary Celebration - From noon to 1:30 p.m., today, the Wellness Center invites the Laboratory workforce to a special 20th Anniversary celebration. Door prizes, freebies, fun games and light refreshments. Also plan to participate in the 10 K-A-Day walking program Kick-Off Walk, beginning at noon. Wear comfortable shoes for the 30 to 45 minutes trail walk.

Franklin Covey workshops in June

Two, half-day Franklin Covey workshops are scheduled for June 8 and 15 in Los Alamos. The workshops are from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Pajarito Room of Fuller Lodge downtown.

Leadership Development Association of Los Alamos is conducting the workshop; the fee is $299, which includes the Franklin Planner Starter kit ($259 without the starter kit).

Technology Expo May 27 at Lab

Applied Engineering Technology/Induction Heating is hosting a technology expo May 27 at the Laboratory. The expo is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Otowi Building cafeteria siderooms and outdoor patio area at Technical Area 3. The expo is free and open to all Laboratory workers.

Retirement planning seminar is May 25

Benefits and Employment Services (HR-B) and Fidelity Investments is hosting a retirement planning seminar May 25 in Los Alamos. The event begins at 8 a.m. at the Reel Deal Movie Theatre at Central Avenue and Oppenheimer Drive downtown.

A number of speakers are scheduled to attend to discuss retirement planning issues. The seminar is particularly geared to University of California Lab employees nearing retirement as well as for UC retirees. Spouses are welcome to attend.

Los Alamos Little Theater presents "Proof"

Los Alamos Little Theater's next production, "Proof," written by David Auburn, won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and the Tony for Best Play. "Proof" explores the complex relationships in the family of a famous mathematician. The plot follows the expected tension that arises after the death of a disabled parent, while Auburn's expertly crafted script weaves topics such as the nature of genius, mental illness, the role of caregivers, sex discrimination and even intellectual property rights into the story of a father's relationship with his two daughters.

Show times are 8:15 p.m., Friday and Saturday (May 21 and 22). There will be a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m., May 23. Tickets are available from Brownells' and at the door, or by calling LALT at 662-5493.

  • "Introduction to RF" and "Advanced General RF & µWave Measurement, Theory and Practice" training seminars from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 24 - May 28, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Albuquerque. Xerox copier supplies no longer available on JIT -- Order direct from Xerox

New procedures are available for the purchase of Xerox copier supplies (i.e. staples, tonner, developer, etc.). These items are no longer available through just-in-time. This does not include paper products. All bulk paper, engineering, copier, printer, recycle, etc., will remain available through JIT. Xerox copier supplies can be purchased as part of the new Xerox Maintenance Agreement Subcontract. All supplies (except paper) can be ordered when monthly meter reads are provided directly to Xerox by calling 1-888-209-7473 and key in your phone number.

When Xerox calls back within an hour, have the following information available:

1. Machine serial number
2. Current meter reads
3. Key operator name
4. Key operator Z number

Registration underway for summer camp at Los Alamos Family YMCA

The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is now registering youths for its annual summer camp. The camp runs from June 7 through Aug. 20.

The "Day Camp Down Under" is for children between ages 5 and 12 and is in session from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at Mountain Elementary School. Activities include field trips, guest speakers, rock climbing, racquetball, library and aquatic center trips and arts and crafts activities.

Cognitive systems workshop in June

Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico are co-hosting the Second Annual Workshop on Cognitive Systems: Human Cognitive Models in System Design workshop. The workshop will explore current thinking and activities with regard to the understanding of cognitive systems. Topics to be addressed in the workshop include:

  • differentiation between cognitive, AI and expert systems, as well as other related fields
  • ongoing research and developments in cognitive systems
  • principles in conceptualization and design of cognitive systems
  • opportunities for the advancement of cognitive systems

The workshop is June 29 - July 1 in Santa Fe. It will combine presentations from leaders in the field and breakout sessions in which selected issues will be considered at some depth.

Vacuum seminar in October

Varian Vacuum Technologies will present a seminar on vacuum technology from 8 a.m. to noon, Oct. 13 at the Physics Building Auditorium. The noncommercial presentation is about vacuum technology in general and is applicable to all brands of vacuum equipment.

Workbooks and refreshments will be provided by Varian. Subjects covered include: Brief introduction to vacuum technology, system pressure, total gas load, materials selection, sstem pumping speed, gauging, system operation, Troubleshooting and a question and answer session.

Employees leaving Lab must attend termination presentation

Employees who are leaving the Laboratory or changing to casual status must attend a benefits termination presentation held by Benefits (HR-B).

The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist.

The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation.

Employees also must obtain a departure processing form from Staffing (HR-S) before the presentation. This form is available at http://www.hr.lanl.gov/hrstaffing/Terminations/index.stm online.

At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.

Employees who require a sign language interpreter should write to benefits@lanl.gov by e-mail three days in advance of the presentation they plan to attend. Or call the benefits office at 5-3842 (TDD).

Because of limited parking, employees should plan to arrive early and/or make alternative transportation arrangements, such as using Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico's ride service.
