Prescribed burning continues in Jemez Mountains

Laboratory employees and Los Alamos residents may see smoke at times during the week as prescribed burn operations continue in the Jemez Mountains.

Some 2,000 acres of forest land have been ignited as part of the prescribed burn to protect life and property by reducing wildfire threat to the Sierra los Pinos-Vallecitos de los Indios recreational areas, a spokesman for the Santa Fe National Forest said.

"While ignition on this fire is complete, crews will continue monitoring this fire over the next month," District Fire Management Officer Dan Key explained. "We will continue to keep fire fighters on-site, monitoring control lines over the next several days, and district crews will continue to monitor the fire area on a daily basis over the next couple weeks until all residual fires (burning stumps, logs, etc.) are completely extinguished."
