Security travel tips

Law enforcement officials say crime is rising at many low-cost hotels and motels. Crimes against guests are increasing in categories ranging from burglary and assault to murder. The deteriorating security situation comes at a time when many business travelers are opting for budget accommodations instead of more expensive lodging.

There are steps travelers can take for safer business travel. Motels/hotels without room phones, deadbolts (not just chains), and extra sliding glass door bolts or bars should be avoided. Women traveling alone should never open the door unless sure of their visitor's identity.

Have the bellman bring your luggage to the room even if it is only one bag. Make him wait until you are checked in so that he can escort you. Examine the room completely, including closets and bathroom, while he is still there.

Finally, check all the locks. Don't accept a room with any broken ones even if it's for a sliding glass door to your 12th-story balcony.
