Wellness Center news The Wellness Center locker rooms will undergo a major renovation in the next few weeks, beginning with the men's restroom. All updates on the progress of the construction will be posted on the Wellness Center's Web site at http://www.wellness.lanl.gov/events.htm online. It is suggested that regular Wellness Center clients bookmark this Web site for future reference and updated information. Important dates: Thursday (April 22) - Water will be shut off to the building at 4 p.m. No restroom or shower facilities available. Clients are highly encouraged to bring water. The exercise facility will remain open until 8 p.m. Friday (April 23) - The Wellness Center will be closed to all personnel. No entry will be allowed into the building, except for authorized KSL personnel in personal protective equipment. All classes are cancelled. Monday (April 26) - The men's room will be open for limited use only. No locker or shower facilities are guaranteed. Plan your workouts accordingly and make alternate showering arrangements as necessary. The women's locker room will be fully functional. Updated 4/21/04 Colorectal screening kits available today From noon to 1:30 p.m., today, Occupational Medicine (HSR-2) is giving away a limited quantity of LifeGuard home test kits for detecting fecal occult blood for individuals at risk. Information about colorectal cancer will be available along with the free test kits. The screening kits will be available in the lobby of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Fecal occult blood is one of several screening tests recommended beginning at age 50, and earlier for higher risk groups. Those groups include people with a personal or family history of benign colorectal polyps, colorectal cancer, or inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's Disease. National Volunteer Week is April 18 - 24 and the Laboratory is joining in the festivities with The Great Garbage Grab (at the Lab). In response to employee concerns (as expressed in the Reader's Forum) about the littering of Lab property, organizations are encouraged to form teams to clean up designated Lab areas. Facility and Waste Operations (FWO) Division is hosting a friendly competition between organizations for the Traveling Trash Trophy. The organization that collects the most trash between April 19 - 30, will be the proud owner of this prestigious award. We need teams, team leaders, etc..to get your organizations involved. The Community Relations (CRO) Office will provide gloves, garbage bags and safety vests. The first 150 volunteers get an official Great Garbage Grab t-shirt, buttons, magnets, mirrors and key chains. Habitat for Humanity - Española Valley/Los Alamos needs volunteers. The next Habitat house is already in the early stages of construction and at least one more house is planned for this year. We have specific needs for a backup caller for Los Alamos volunteers and new volunteer, site selection, family support and church relations committee members, as well as volunteer home builders. Whether experienced in construction or picking up a hammer for the first time, contact Yvonne Maestas at the Española/Los Alamos Habitat for Humanity office at 747-2690. 3. Cimarron High School is hosting a Career Fair from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, April 30. The students would like to have Lab volunteers represent the Science, Technology and Engineering portion of the sixteen career clusters they have studied. Volunteers who participate in this event will explain the steps, training and education needed to reach their current occupation. Santa Fe Beautiful is celebrating its 20th birthday by sponsoring the Great American Spring Clean-Up Day Saturday, April 24 in Santa Fe. Spring Clean Up Day is cosponsored by the city of Santa Fe's Solid Waste Management Division and the Parks and Recreation Department. Residents of Santa Fe County, and citizens in communities around the state also are conducting clean up days in conjunction with Keep America Beautiful's Great American Clean-Up Day. On Spring Clean Up Day, volunteers meet at the city's Operations and Maintenance Complex, 1142 Siler Road, from 7 to 9 a.m., to pick up bags and work gloves and receive assigned areas for picking up litter. Neighborhood and school groups may choose to pick up litter in their neighborhood or on their school campus. City crews will pick up the refuse and remove it to the city landfill. Afterward, beginning about noon, volunteers are invited to a picnic at the city's Frenchy's Field Park on Agua Fria Street at Osage Avenue. There they will receive their official Great American Spring Clean Up Day t-shirt and will be eligible for several door prizes. There is ample parking at the park. Updated 4/13/04 Tree thinning activities in Rendija Canyon A project to remove dead and dying trees on the south side of the bottom of Rendija Canyon on Department of Energy property began April 12. Infrastructure Projects (FWO-IP) is doing the work, which is expected to continue through about May 15. For public safety, the work area will be limited to FWO-IP and subcontract personnel. These sessions are for those POCs who have not taken the prior POC training. The sessions will provide interested employees with the basic tools needed to continue to implement this LIR and answers to questions regarding its requirements.

Updated 4/21/04 Registration underway for summer camp at Los Alamos Family YMCA The Los Alamos Family YMCA, a Laboratory sanctioned organization, is now registering youths for its annual summer camp. The camp runs from June 7 through Aug. 20. The "Day Camp Down Under" is for children between ages 5 and 12 and is in session from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at Mountain Elementary School. Activities include field trips, guest speakers, rock climbing, racquetball, library and aquatic center trips and arts and crafts activities. Between April 12 and May 7, the $25 registration fee is being waived and membership in the Los Alamos Family YMCA is not required. The Los Alamos Family YMCA is located at 1450 Iris St. downtown. Check out new classes and returning favorites. Remember that the following Health Promotion Classes are open to all Laboratory employees. Computer Jocks Unite - Take hold of your health and prevent cumulative trauma from occurring. This class emphasizes strengthening and stretching for the upper extremities (arm, forearm, hand), the neck and upper back. The program is designed to help prevent injuries to these areas from continual use on the computer. Includes a light warm-up along with exercises for the specific targeted areas of concern. Get away from your desk and join in. No fee. 12:30 to 1 p.m., Tuesday and Thursdays, April 6 - May 6, Wellness Center Room 101. Mariposa: Practical skills for Menopause - This popular four-week class returns with an update on the latest treatment and medication options, nutrition and exercise for easing menopausal symptoms and emotional adjustments to mid-life change. The first event will take place this evening in the Upstairs Rotunda at Mesa Public Library and feature Patricia Tillery discussing her book "Spirit of the Ordinary, Reading Women's Lives," a compilation of letters exchanged over 50 years among a group of six women who met as WAC's during the Manhattan Project. Updated 4/19/04 Los Alamos County Fair competition on May 1 Young Los Alamos County cowgirls between the ages of 14 and 23 can compete on May 1 for the 2004 Los Alamos County Festival, Fair and Rodeo Queen's Court. The Horsemanship Competition is at 10 a.m. at Brewer Arena. The Personality Competition is at 1 p.m. at the Sheriff's Posse Shack. Deadline to enter is Friday (April 23). Each contestant will give a formal speech before a panel of judge(s), and will compete in a Horsemanship contest. Winners will go on to participate in the Red River Rodeo and the Rodeo de Santa Fe - in addition to reigning over the Los Alamos County Festival, Fair and Rodeo in August. In September, the Rodeo Queens from around the state also compete at the New Mexico State Fair in Albuquerque for the title of State Queen. The statewide winner will receive another crown and buckle, in addition to a saddle and $1,000. The LabVIEW Basics I prepares you to develop test and measurement, data acquisition, instrument control, data logging and measurement analysis applications using LabVIEW. The LabVIEW Basics II course is a logical extension of Basics I and prepares you to design complete, stand-alone applications in LabVIEW. LabVIEW Intermediate I teaches structured practices to design, develop, test and deploy LabVIEW applications. The Intermediate II course builds on the skills developed in LabVIEW Intermediate I by doing an in-depth examination of memory management and performance techniques to help extend the ability to develop LabVIEW code that maximizes application performance. Every registered individual will receive an event T-shirt (short sleeved for kids and long sleeved for adults) and a packet filled with entertaining and educational dog related information. The termination presentations are held every Laboratory pay day for University of California Lab employees. Employees who are retiring aren't required to attend a presentation, but rather, they should schedule a meeting with their designated benefits specialist. The presentations begin at 8:30 a.m. in room P280 on the second floor of the Otowi Building at Technical Area 3. Pre-registration is required. Employees should register on line at http://hrcluster.lanl.gov/TIOCourses/TIOAha.asp?CourseNumber=21013 one to two weeks prior to their last scheduled work day to sign up for a benefits termination presentation. At the presentation, employees will receive a packet of information about their benefits and savings balances. They will learn about options to continue or convert insurance plans and distribution options for savings funds.
