Parking lot near Otowi Building, Study Center to close Saturday

The surface parking lot east of the Otowi Building and north of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center at Technical Area 3 is closing on Saturday (April 17). Signs were posted in the parking lot earlier this week alerting Laboratory employees.

The lot is closing to allow construction to begin on the National Security Sciences Building parking structure that will contain 675 parking spaces when it opens in the spring of 2005, said Randy Parks of Infrastructure, Facilities and Construction (IFC).

The loss of 280 parking spaces at that site has been offset by the opening Monday of the TA-3 West parking garage on West Mercury Road, west of SM-31. This garage has 337 parking spaces. An additional 80 surface parking spaces will be available in the garage next month when the contractor removes its equipment.

To assist Lab workers who won't be able to park in the Otowi Building lot, Facilities and Waste Operations (FWO) Division employees with radios will be stationed at other parking lots in and around TA-3 to direct employees to available parking spaces. The FWO staff will be in place from 6:30 to 9 a.m. to assist in finding parking during the week of April 19. (Also, see the April 1 Daily Newsbulletin story on the Los Alamos Bus shuttle system).

A parking task force created by Jim Holt, associate director for operations (ADO), is examining near-term options for adding more surface parking in and around the TA-3 area.
