Immele to discuss status and perspectives of national security programs

"Q" -cleared Laboratory employees will get an opportunity to learn the status of nuclear weapons, threat reduction and related programs from Deputy Director for National Security John Immele at a colloquium scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 13, in the Nicholas Metropolis Center for Modeling and Simulation auditorium at Technical Area 3. Seating is limited and only Q-cleared employees may attend.

Immele said he plans his high-level review, entitled "National Security Perspectives," as a "state of the programs" that will complement the state of the Laboratory talk delivered by Director G. Peter Nanos on March 22.

"The director asked all of the deputy and the associate directors to review the work for which they are responsible and offer a status report for employees, and I decided to kick off these presentations," Immele said.

"I plan to look at not only where we are now and some of our national security accomplishments, but also spend quite a bit of time on our priorities and where we are going," Immele said.

Immele expects to discuss the expected benefits of the recent restructuring of nuclear weapons programs, along with the Laboratory's strategic goals of developing predictive capabilities and meeting the nation's nuclear weapons requirements.

His review also will include how recent changes in the national and international security environment might affect Laboratory program priorities. These topics include the Nuclear Posture Review and expected changes in stockpile composition, defense transformation, and nonproliferation, counterterrorism and homeland security.
