Thursday, March 25, 2004 Proposals for joint research projects soughtLab, UC, Davis CARE program Laboratory researchers working in computer science, materials science and biosciences can submit proposals for collaborative research with students, scientists and engineers from the University of California, Davis. Through the Laboratory -- UC, Davis Cooperative Agreement on Research and Education program, co-principle investigators from the Lab and UC, Davis, submit proposals for research. Proposals are due online by May 3 and successful applicants will be informed of their awards in late June. The goal of the CARE program is to identify and fund opportunities for promising students and faculty to participate in new and innovative research, said Allen Hartford, Science and Technology Base Programs (STB) Office leader . For the Laboratory, the CARE program enhances collaborations with universities in areas of strategic importance and provides a research environment that encourages students to pursue technical careers, possibly at the Laboratory, he said. "We want to strengthen our relationship with UC, Davis and at the same time expose students to the Laboratory and its programs," said Hartford. "Providing these students and their faculty mentors with the opportunity to participate in our research programs will help us develop a continuing pipeline of scientists and engineers to maintain the Laboratory's excellence." Hartford said UC, Davis benefits through use of the Laboratory's facilities, resources and intellectual capabilities, adding that the collaborative research funded through CARE will strengthen both institutions. The steering committee will favor proposals that emphasize placement of students in rewarding education or research assignments that complement the university program and Laboratory needs. Undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students will complete course work at UC, Davis and perform research at Los Alamos when the student's UC, Davis major professor and the Los Alamos mentor feel it is appropriate. "We are looking for high-quality, collaborative basic research on topics that are strategically important to the Laboratory and to the university," Hartford said.
